1. introduction to the 7 basic plots

Published in 2004, Christopher Booker’s “The Seven Basic Plots: Why We Tell Stories” reportedly took him 34 years to write. We learn from this book that most stories and films fit into a basic plot line.

According to Booker, all the stories ever told can be divided up across these seven categories:

  • Overcoming the monster
  • Rags to Riches
  • The Quest
  • Voyage & Return
  • Comedy
  • Tragedy
  • Rebirth

Read about all 7 the Plot Types below, whilst you do this keep in mind that you will need to pick one to use as a template for your story.

  • Which of the 7 Plot Types do you think you like most?
  • Make a Top 3 list of the Plot Types you most enjoy. Study these 3 types.
  • Discuss these types with your group and teacher to be sure you make the right choice.
  • In the next lesson you are going to choose one of these Plot Types as a template for writing your own story.
